Vitor Colares - A Brazilian Enigma

There's not much on the internet about Vitor Colares, a rarity today. What we do know is that the Brazilian singer and songwriter was born in 1978 in Fortaleza. His latest album 'I Understand the Night as an Ocean Shading the Sun World' was released at the beginning of the year and blends acoustic guitar, noise and spoken word.

Moments of John Frusciante's experimentation coalesce with other moments of Jeff Buckley's solemnity and again with early Radiohead robotic readings. The title is poetic and the cover is simple, this duality weaves throughout the album. Moments of sparseness are quickly interrupted with layered vocals and electronic instrumentation.

His last two outings had the same duality, but they didn't come across as powerful and as striking as here. The album's darkness isn't somewhere you wilt away, but a space you can relax, knowing that something new is just around the corner.
